WW, Nick and I went to Washington this past weekend, as a past Presidential Volunteer Award winner and Presidential Greeter, I was invited to the WHITE HOUSE (can I even believe I am typing that????) to hear President Bush's comments on volunteerism on the South Lawn of the White House on Monday, September 8. The entire day was surreal, infact, we packed in about as much Washington into a 48 hour period as one could! The above picture is taken on the South Lawn of the White House, shortly after President Bush's speech.

We visited Arlington Cemetery, The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum (and saw the helicopter that Ross Perot Jr. flew around the world in when he was 23 years old), ate Ethiopian, Chinese and fab crab dip at Old Ebbitt Grill, saw a play at The Kennedy Center (Shear Madness), toured the Capital with an aide from Congressman Sessions office, visited the Library of Congress, saw the Supreme Court, visited the Washington Monument, Lincoln Monument, Vietnam Memorial, Korean Memorial and World War II Memorial. And, Sunday afternoon, we heard Rascal Flatt playing from the lawn of the White House!

Luckily, Jan got back into DC Sunday evening and joined us for the play at The Kennedy Center and dinner after wards at Les Halles to celebrate Jan's birthday!

As we were leaving Ford Park one evening, we came upon a man with a wolf (tame!)

We were able to sneak in a fast week in Vail (we missed last year) and stayed, once again, at our favorite place, the Lodge at Lionshead. What a fun and restful week we had! Nick spent most days "bombing" down the mountain and would meet WW and I for lunch in either Vail or Lionshead. We were so impressed with the renovations in Lionshead.....it looks incredible! We saw a free concert at the FordAmphitheater, had lunch at Sweet Basil, dinner at Terra Bistro, walked through the weekly farmer's market, read and just hung out! A great way to spend the last week of summer vacation!

While Nick was off on the Pecos in New Mexico with his class from St. Mark's, and WW worked, I jetted off to DC to spend 4 fun filled days with Jan!!

We had lots of laughs, lunches and dinners, toured the National Portrait Gallery (way cool portraits of ALL the presidents), toured the monuments and memorials, caught a play at the Kennedy Center (Shear Madness....hilarious!), and Jan (BSFW) snagged us a much coveted West Wing Tour of the White House!!!! How cool is that???????

And, I must say, she was SURPRISED!!!!! (Carter, so graciously brings Ruth Ann and doesn't even stay for lunch!!!!) All the fun friends were there......Leslie, Ann, Peggy, Missy, Mary Ann, Suzanne, and Jill. Great wine selections, too, Carter!!!!!

Three best friends lunched at the very cool, newly opened, Fearings, where Dean came to our table to give us suggestions for our lunch and to wish our friend a very happy day!!!! Champagne flowed like wa-ter.....we pretty much solved every problem known to man! Amazing fabulous banana creme pie with THE most amazing meringue ever! See recipe below!!!!

WW and Nicholas headed out this morning at about 6:30 to wait patiently in the #1 blind. Shortly before 8 a.m., this beautiful buck appeared. He's a gorgeous 10 point that field dressed, weighed, 150 lbs. Nice job!

The Bryan Clan at Riverbend Ranch!!!

We just enjoyed the MOST amazing weekend at the ranch! Nicole and her family arrived Saturday morning from Austin with their 2 beautiful children. I was completely amazed at Nevin and how he looks EXACTLY like Nicole's brother, Bobby! OMG!! And I am completely smitten with Ms. Bailey. What a gorgeous baby!!!! We carved pumpkins....Nevin took his home with him and Nick used his mom's dremel to carve an amazing skull and crossbones!

We had a big day of feeding cattle (especially #4) and fishing!

Nevin went fishing for the 1st time and caught a massive catfish! Yeah!!!!

Ms. Bailey and Lacey....this baby is the CUTEST! She was SO exhausted that she went to bed Saturday night at 6:30, waking the next morning at 7:30 and then went down for a 2 1/2 hour nap at 9:a.m. Sunday morning! Too much fresh Texas air!

We are so blessed to be not only great friends with Nicole's parents (we named our son after her father) but also to be friends with the 2nd and 3rd generation! Brian and Nicole have a free pass anytime to visit RIverbend (and help Nick with his homework!)

I named this my "Committee Meeting Salad", as I always serve it at committee meetings and everyone always asks for the recipe!

Enjoy!!!

MIXED GREEN SALAD WITH ORANGES, DRIED CRANBERRIES, BLUE CHEESE AND PECANS

Bright, fresh flavors star in this holiday salad.

1 cup plus 3 tablespoons orange juice

6 tablespoons dried cranberries

3 1/2 tablespoons olive oil

2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

1 tablespoon grated orange peel (I used lemon peel)

6 cups mixed baby greens

3 small cans mandarin oranges

4 oz. Blue Cheese crumbled

3/4 cup Sweet and Spicy Pecans (recipe follows)

Bring 1 cup orange juice to simmer in heavy small saucepan. Remove from heat. Mix in dried cranberries. Let stand until softened, about 30 minutes. Drain well; discard soaking juice.

Whisk oil, vinegar, and orange peel and remaining 3 tablespoons orange juice in small bowl to blend. Mix in cranberries. Season dressing to taste with salt and pepper. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Bring to room temperature before serving.)

Place greens, pecans, blue cheese and oranges in large bowl and toss with dressing.

Serves 6.

SWEET AND SPICY CANDIED PECANS

Nonstick vegetable oil spray

3 tablespoons light corn syrup

1 1/2 tablespoons sugar

3/4-teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon (generous) freshly ground black pepper

1/8-teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 1/2 cups pecan pieces

Preheat oven to 325°F. Spray baking sheet with nonstick spray.

Combine corn syrup and next 4 ingredients in large bowl. Stir to blend.

Add pecans; stir gently to coat. Transfer to baking sheet.

Place large piece of foil on work surface. Bake pecans 5 minutes. Using fork, stir pecans to coat with melted spice mixture. Continue baking until pecans are golden and coating bubbles, about 10 minutes. Transfer to foil. Working quickly, separate nuts with fork. Cool. (Can be made 3 days ahead. Store airtight at room temperature.)

Makes 1 1/2 cups.

Attached is the recipe for Green Grape Cobbler and Pie Crust from our dear friends Molly and Francis. This is a fabulous dish!
Here is Mother's recipe for Green Grape Cobbler. She was so exicted to get the grapes last night. She had given up on finding any this year. She loves her green grapes! Thanks for sending the boys to pick grapes for her. She is picking them from the stems now. A few years ago I made a Haile Family Cookbook for our reunion. This is a page from it. We will be happy to give you one. It does have some good recipes in it. Hope you will like it. Mother said she usually uses 1 1/2 to 2 cups sugar in the cobbler. Just however sweet you want it. Last night she had used the box of Jiffy pie crust mix. Betty Crocker pie crust mix is also very good. If you want to make crust from scratch, here is her favorite recipe. She said it makes alot, about for 3 pies. Will keep a few days in the refrigerator and freezes great.
Perfect Pie Crusts
4 c. flour 1 tsp. sugar 2 tsp. salt
1 3/4 c. Crisco shortening 1/2 c. water
1 tbsp. vinegar 1 lg. egg
Place flour, sugar, salt and Crisco in large mixing bowl; mix until crumbly. Mix water, vinegar and egg in small bowl; add to flour mixture. Stir well. Divide into 4 equal parts; shape into balls. Cover with plastic wrap; chill for 30 minutes. Sprinkle pastry with additional flour; place on floured board. Roll out to fit pie pan. May be frozen, if desired; thaw before rolling out. May be kept in refrigerator for as long as 3 days before rolling out.
